King post retaining wall
Lozells Road Mosque
A King Post retaining wall supporting basement construction for an extension to the existing mosque, with excavation depths reaching four metres in places.
The mosque extension required a basement in a heavily built-up residential area. Council planning required a silent piling method, so the retaining-wall solution had to address that requirement while supporting the planned excavation close to neighbouring properties.
The team proposed a King Post wall to meet the silent-piling requirement. The retaining system was installed from existing ground level before the subsequent basement excavation.
As excavation progressed, the wall provided support to the surrounding ground, with retained depths of up to four metres in places. The supplied photographs show steel King Posts with concrete infill panels and the wall around the basement excavation.
The wall provided effective ground support for construction of the mosque extension's basement. Installing the retaining system before excavation allowed the work to proceed with support already in place, delivering a high-quality finish.
