Steel posts are embedded in the ground, with infill such as precast concrete panels placed between them as excavation proceeds. The panels transfer earth pressure to the posts, which resist loading through embedment and any designed restraint.
King post and panel walls can adapt to stepped or sloping sites. The ground conditions, surcharge loading and groundwater need assessment before selecting a wall type. DAACE’s Parkview Hospital and Littlecombe projects show examples of king post retaining works.
