Temporary works and cofferdams

Cofferdams are temporary structures used to exclude water from an area so that construction work can be carried out. They are commonly used for the repair or replacement of bridge piers and other underwater structures. Cofferdams can also be used to construct dams and dykes.

There are several types of cofferdams, but one of the most common is the sheet pile cofferdam. This type of cofferdam is made by driving rows of interlocking sheets (sheet piles) into the ground around the area to be worked on. The sheets are then connected to each other and braced so that they form a watertight barrier. If necessary, pumps can be used to remove any water that leaks into the cofferdam.

Cofferdams are then often removed once construction is complete and the area has been refilled with water.
